Media freedom and media ethics

Overview of this Sinhala essay

The essay explains the role and responsibility of the media. Media includes newspapers, TV, radio, the internet, and social media, and it provides important information to the public. While media freedom is the right to share information without limits, this freedom must be used responsibly.

Not all information is helpful to society, especially when it is sensitive or false. Sharing fake news or sensitive topics like murder can harm people and create problems. Media should not be used to spread lies for political or economic gain. Instead, it should share balanced and truthful information.

The main responsibility of both traditional and social media is to support peace in society, encourage positive thinking, and promote respect and understanding. Unfortunately, some media platforms misuse their power and spread false or harmful content. This can lead to violence, especially in a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country like Sri Lanka.

False news, especially about religion or ethnicity, can increase hatred and violence among people. Therefore, media should act with ethics and care to protect society.
