As the population of Sri Lanka gradually grew, the amount of land used for agriculture also gradually decreased. It is in this background that the agro-industry entered the cultivation of agricultural crops that can yield more with less space. There, hybrid food crop cultivation was spread using science and technology techniques. Although the measures taken by agronomists to overcome the challenge of overpopulation and insufficient land allocated for cultivation were reasonable, a serious problem that arose with it was the need to use toxic chemicals for pest control and fertilizers.
